ORGANISATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The structure of an organization either facilitates or hampers its performance. A number of analytical tools support identification of an effective organisational structure. A suitable structure is only one element in organisational development; again, a number of tools and skills are required to support an organisational development program. Organisational development requires management as a project.

Integration or merging of two businesses is a specialist sub-set of organisational development and arises when an acquisition takes place.

Ian has a strong track record in organisational development, structuring and integration. Here are two examples.

In the context of an overall project which involved advising on the business case for acquisition of an engineering business by a national engineering services business
  • worked on the bid and tender documents, then, on completion of the acquisition
  • advised on the optimal structure
  • advised on the suitability and retention of the incoming senior team
  • recommended the post-integration structure
  • developed the integration plan and, with a supporting team, managed its implementation.
In another, Ian made an assessment of a manufacturing business – performance, structure, service capabilities, market fit, manager capabilities – and recommended:
  • a new structure
  • redundancy of several managers
  • divestment of certain lines
  • realisation of certain assets
  • integration of management and reporting processes.
